FAQs

How do I access a Zoom meeting?
Do I need a camera and a microphone to use Zoom?
  • It helps to have a camera and microphone, but you can still access a Zoom meeting without them.
  • Most computers have a camera and a microphone built-in. If you are using earbuds, be sure they have a microphone OR that your Zoom is connected to your computer's microphone.
  • If you do not have a microphone, use the Chat feature in Zoom to communicate with the person hosting the Zoom meeting.
Can you see me?
  • If you have your camera turned on and connected to Zoom, yes, I can see you.
  • You always have the option to turn off your camera and microphone for any reason. How you connect is your choice.
Can you see my screen?
Why is my screen/camera not showing up?
  • Make sure the video is turned on. To do this, find the video camera image at the bottom of your Zoom picture. It should be green. If it is red with a line through it, this means your video is off. Click on the video camera icon to turn on your camera.
  • If you do not have a video camera (many laptops come with one included, often located at the top of the laptop screen towards the center), you may not be able to use the video feature. You will still be able to share your screen and view the host's shared screen. Not having a camera does not necessarily impact the quality of your Zoom experience.
Why isn't my sound working?
  • Make sure that your speakers are turned up and not on silent.
  • Make sure that you or your host are not muted. To do this, look for the microphone at the bottom of your Zoom picture. If the microphone is red with a line through it, you are muted. Hover over the image of the microphone and click to unmute.
  • If you cannot hear your host, use the Zoom chat feature (available at the bottom of the Zoom screen in fullscreen mode) to let them know.
Is Zoom disruptive or unprofessional if I have my kids, dogs, life going on the background?
  • Absolutely not! Research is actually a part of life and life happens around your research. We're here to help when and where you need us.
Does Zoom have closed captioning?
  • With your permission, we can record the Zoom session and provide you a recording with captioning. Please let us know ahead of time if you would like to do this.
