Racial Integration in Athletics: Wayne County High Schools, 1965-1971

Welcome

This is the digital display in conjunction with the display on the 2nd floor of Moye Library.

The photos included in this digital display were taken from yearbooks digitized for DigitalNC.org for the following schools: Charles B. Aycock High, Goldsboro High, and Southern Wayne High.

The 1970 yearbook for each of the mentioned schools was missing. The 1969/70 school year was when Goldsboro High and Dillard High merged and Norwayne's 10th grade class integrated into C. B. Aycock. Complete integration for the other Wayne County High Schools started in the 1970/71 school year. Racial integration in athletics didn't begin in the 1969/70 school year. It was optional for non-white students to attend white high schools in Wayne County a few years before the forced merging of the schools. Starting in 1965, it was found that some athletic teams included African-Americans, even if it was only one.
